  • Chion-In Wajun Kaikan
  • What are some recommended accommodations in the Kansai area where I can experience Shukubo lodging?

I'm interested in experiencing Shukubo lodging. I'd like to go in the season when the autumn leaves are beautiful. Are there Shukubo where I can experience morning religious services and zazen, eat vegetarian cuisine, and feel comfortable even for beginners?

Chion-In Wajun Kaikan

400-2 Rinka-cho

  • Shukubo!

  • It's located inside Chion-in Temple, so it's very accessible! It serves kaiseki (traditional Japanese course meal) instead of shojin ryori (vegetarian cuisine), and the menu includes fish and meat, which is a novelty compared to other Shukubo. However, you can still participate in the copying of sutras and morning memorial services. There is a large, beautiful bath, and it's practically a "hotel" run by the temple.

  • You can experience copying sutras and enjoy delicious vegetarian cuisine

  • I stayed there quite a while ago, did some Buddhist scriptures, and had vegetarian cuisine. It was a good experience. It seems that they have various plans now. It's more of a regular inn than a temple. There's even a TV. So I think you can stay there without feeling nervous. The monks will bring you the food, though.

  • Shukubo recommended for families and beginners

  • The Chishaku-in Hall in Kyoto is easily accessible from Kyoto Station and is close to Sanjusangendo and the Kyoto National Museum. You can participate in the morning service and, as a reward, you can see Hasegawa Tohaku's sliding door paintings. The price is reasonable and it is the best recommendation for beginners to Shukuboexperience.

  • Shukubo in a remote area of Wakayama

  • How about visiting Mount Koya, a hidden gem in Wakayama, or rather, a hidden gem in Japan? If you go by public transportation, it takes 90 minutes from Namba by train, cable car, and bus, and 120 minutes by car, as you can imagine there will be traffic jams. It takes a long time even though the straight-line distance is short. When you enter Mount Koya, you will be overwhelmed by the atmosphere you will experience for the first time.

  • A Shukubo lodge where you can feel the history and tradition

  • When it comes to Shukubo in the Kansai region, Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture is the place to go. Why not take the opportunity to visit a World Heritage Site? The accommodations are solid and close to the entrance to the temple, so you can enjoy your stay without any inconvenience. The autumn leaves are also a highlight of this tourist spot, so I'm sure you'll be satisfied. You can also experience Zen meditation and shakyo by making a reservation.

  • Shukubo in Wakayama Prefecture that serves delicious vegetarian cuisine

  • It's a wonderful Shukuboexperience with a independent guest cottages guest room. Internet access is available in all rooms, which is a great service. You can freely participate in morning services, so please do so if you have time. The vegetarian cuisine is incredibly soothing.

  • Shukubo with a variety of ways to enjoy yourself

  • This is Shukubo lodging in Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture, and it has a wide variety of accommodation plans (although when written like this it doesn't sound like Shukubo), making it an interesting lodging. They offer a one night stay with two meals and a vegetarian meal plan with morning service, an overnight stay plan where you can bring your own food, prayer beads making and a morning tour of Danjo Garan with a monk, and more. It's not cheap, but there are rooms with toilets, washrooms and Wi-Fi, so I think the price is reasonable. I think making prayer beads in particular is an experience that will become a good memory!

Enryakuji Kaikan

4220 Sakamoto Honmachi, Otsu-shi

  • Recommended for sightseeing at Enryakuji Temple in Shiga Prefecture

  • Shukubo is located in Shiga Prefecture, in a quiet area. It is behind the Monju-ro. In the morning, you can participate voluntarily in the service at the Konponchudo. It will leave you feeling refreshed. The food is of course vegetarian, but it is colorful and creative, making it fun to eat. The view of Lake Biwa from the large public bath is also amazing.

Koyasan Onsen Fukuchi-in

  • Recommended Shukubo at Mount Koya

  • If this is your first time staying Shukubo lodging, I recommend "Koyasan Onsen Fukuchiin" in Mount Koya, Wakayama Prefecture. This is a popular Shukubo at Mount Koya. You can eat vegetarian cuisine and freshly made soba noodles. If you go on a reception day, you might be lucky to meet a free guide.

  • If you're looking for Shukubo, we recommend Mount Koya!

  • Of course, it has to be Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture, the head temple. The dignified atmosphere calms the soul. Jimyoin Temple in particular is wonderful, with well-maintained rooms, food, and gardens. You can spend a relaxing time independent guest cottages from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, clearing your mind.

Mount Shukubo Lodgings Fumonin

伊都郡高野町高野山608

  • Recommended for a luxurious Shukubo experience

  • I think it's the best among the many Shukubo. It's Shukubo at a temple in Mount Koya in Wakayama Prefecture, and you can choose from a Japanese and Western room suite with a bed to a simple 10-tatami Japanese-style room. Of course, the price is reasonable. However, you can experience the same things you can at a regular Shukubo, such as copying sutras and enjoying vegetarian cuisine. Depending on the plan, you can even have meals in your room. Rather than a trip for young people, I think it's perfect as a gift trip for parents who want to try sightseeing at Mount Koya for once.

Ninna-ji Temple Omuro Kaikan

33 Omuro-ochi, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto-shi

  • Recommended for beginners

  • The Ninnaji Temple Shukubo in Kyoto are easy for beginners to experience. It is conveniently located for sightseeing, close to Kinkakuji Temple. The room did not have much of a Shukubo atmosphere, more like a private lodging. There was also a large public bath. The food was a luxurious kaiseki meal that you would never expect at Shukubo, and it was delicious. I went to bed early, participated in the morning service, and had a conversation, so I was able to spend my time there very meaningfully.
