• Most of the rooms face the Otaru Canal, making this a luxury hotel by the canal. The view from the windows is fantastic at night. Breakfast is Buffet, so you can enjoy a variety of dishes, including pork shabu-shabu, from the morning. The hot spring is spacious and you can relax in it. It's close to Otaru Station, and the location makes it easy to visit, so I recommend it.

• All rooms have a bath with a view of the ocean. There is also a large bath with rocks and a cypress bath. For meals, we enjoyed an elegant breakfast while looking out over the Sea of Japan. You can choose from a creative menu using Kitajima pork and other ingredients from Hokkaido, or a buffet.

• I recommend Asarigawa Onsen as a base for exploring Otaru. The Asari Classe Hotel has Japanese-Japanese and Western room for couples, which I think is nice. The open-air bath surrounded by the green nature was also wonderful. It warmed up my body after a walk in Otaru. The French cuisine, which uses local Hokkaido ingredients, was stylish and delicious.

• If you are going to visit the Otaru Canal, this is the closest place and is recommended. The exterior looks like a business hotel, but the room was a beautiful Japanese-style twin room. I stayed on the canal side, so I could see the canal right in front of me from the window. There is a large communal bath and an open-air bath, and you can also rent a private open-air bath for a fee, so you can relax and unwind.
