  • I am looking for a hot spring inn in Yamagata Prefecture where I can drink delicious sake.

My American friend loves Japanese sake, so we are planning to travel together to Yamagata Prefecture, which is famous for sake. I am looking for a hot spring inn in Yamagata where I can drink Shii local sake. Is there a good place? It would be helpful if the inn is located in a place that is easily accessible by public transportation, or has a shuttle service. (I am also considering traveling by taxi, so it is okay if it is a little far away.) Thank you.

Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso

54 Zao Onsen

  • A traditional Japanese inn that is also popular with overseas guests

  • The purely Japanese atmosphere is very nice, and the furnishings are decorated with crafts that have been passed down for generations, so I think my friend from America will be pleased. The atmosphere of the hot spring is also the best. For dinner, I recommend trying the Zao beef teppanyaki steak with delicious local sake.

  • There is an all-you-can-drink plan that includes sake.

  • If you're going to Zao Onsen, I recommend going there as there is a bus from JR Yamagata Station. The all-you-can-drink plan includes unlimited sake, wine, and craft beer! You can drink whatever you like with your Yamagata beef. Zenshichinoyu Hotel has Japanese-style rooms that can accommodate up to 5 people, so you can stay with friends. The hot springs are 100% 100% natural hot spring. There is a garden bath with a view of the garden, and the 7 private baths, including an open-air bath, give you a great sense of freedom! Some of your foreign friends may not like large public baths, so I think they will like the private baths.

  • How about taking a dip in the hot springs, eating some potato stew, and enjoying some local sake?

  • Since he is from America, I think he will be happy to be able to enjoy both Japanese and Western styles. When I stayed here before, he contacted me the day before and canceled, so I was able to stay in a room with a tatami bed, one level higher, for the same price. The hot springs, both indoor and outdoor, were excellent, with good water. For dinner, I enjoyed local sake (Otokoyama? Maybe not, but it's a good sake with a name similar to that) with Yamagata's specialty potato stew. Even though I don't like potatoes, I enjoyed it. I went in the summer, so it was cold, but in winter it might be good hot sake.

Zao Shikino Hotel

  • A hot spring hotel where you can enjoy local sake and wine!

  • At Zao Shiki Hotel, one bottle of sake or wine is served per person with dinner! You can drink it in your room or take it home, but I recommend having it with Yamagata beef at dinner. The rooms can accommodate up to four people, so it is also recommended for group trips. All rooms have tatami mats and beds, making it a stylish Japanese modern hotel recommended for foreigners. The hot spring has a large bath with a glass wall that overlooks the view, and an open-air bath in independent guest cottages, where you can bathe in milky white hot spring. I'm sure foreigners will be delighted with the milky white hot spring!

Takamiya Ryokan Yamakawa

2436 Onogawamachi, Yonezawa

  • This is a quaint, long-established Ryokan (Japanese inn) that has been in business for 100 years.

  • The hot spring is a calcium chloride spring with many beneficial effects on the skin, and you can enjoy bathing in the large, spacious bath and the open-air bath. There is a plan with two meals that includes a tasting of three types of local sake from carefully selected Yonezawa breweries, and you can enjoy delicious Japanese black beef and Yonezawa pork suki-shabu.

  • Free shuttle service available for your convenience

  • The nearest station is served by express trains, and is about 5 minutes away by free shuttle bus. Tsuruoka City is home to seven sake breweries, and sake is also sold at the hotel's shop. There is a lukewarm open-air bath, so even if you don't like hot water, it's no problem. There is a port within driving distance, so we recommend the fish dishes. In particular, the cod soup, a Shonai specialty, is exquisite.

Hayama 5-50

  • A luxurious hot spring inn where you can enjoy delicious sake and kaiseki cuisine

  • You can get a panoramic view of the Zao mountain range from the open-air bath. The food is made with locally produced ingredients from Yamagata Prefecture and has a gentle flavor, which goes well with local sake. The lineup includes not only Japanese sake, but also wine and other famous alcoholic beverages from around the world. There is also a private open-air bath and private sauna. There is also a post-bath salon with a library and juice server, which feels like an adult hideaway, so you can relax with friends after your bath.

Yamagata The Takinami

Akayu 3005

  • All rooms come with 100% natural hot spring spring water!

  • The main building is a historic inn that was built 350 years ago. It is a restored building that was originally a village headman's residence from the Yonezawa Uesugi clan era, so you can experience a Japanese atmosphere that is sure to please foreigners as well. The innkeepers will suggest the perfect combination of alcohol, such as Yamagata sake or wine, to go with the ingredients procured that day, so it's perfect for those who like alcohol! All rooms have an open-air bath with 100% natural hot spring water, and there are large public baths for men and women. It is a little more than an 8-minute drive from JR Yamagata Shinkansen Akayu Station, but if you take a taxi it should not be a problem.

  • A long-established Ryokan (Japanese inn) in Gassan Shizu Onsen that offers sake tasting plans

  • This traditional Japanese Ryokan (Japanese inn) is popular with hikers of Mt. Gassan, and you can see the mountain from the rooms and baths. The inn offers a simple local dinner and a sake tasting plan, where you can enjoy famous sake from Shitara Sake Brewery and Gassan Sake Brewery, two of the most famous local sakes. Yamagata has 50 types of sake, but here you can enjoy a variety of local sakes. You can also enjoy a sip of sake after your bath, which is irresistible for alcohol lovers. There are also a variety of baths, including open-air baths and private baths, so you can enjoy the hot springs to your heart's content. Ryokan (Japanese inn) is perfect for touring Yamagata's hot springs and famous sakes.
